Jennifer L. Gray

Certified Civil and Family Mediator

Jennifer has been certified and practicing as a Civil and Family Mediator since 2021. Jennifer has also participated in countless mediations since beginning her legal career in 2003. Jennifer grew up in the Fraser Valley, completing her undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice at the University of the Fraser Valley in 1997. For her legal training, Jennifer enjoyed experiencing our East coast hospitality and obtained her law degree at the University of New Brunswick in 2002.

Along with her role as a mediator, Jennifer continues to act as a lawyer primarily in the areas of family law, personal injury, insurance disputes and other general civil litigation. Jennifer is the recipient of the 2023 Women in Law award for Canada’s Personal Injury Litigation Laywer of the year. Jennifer has also been recognized for her studies regarding violence among families and youth and the impact of violence on family dynamics, receiving the Suran Gukal Memorial Scholarship during her undergraduate studies. Jennifer has also undertaken training in resolving high conflict disputes specifically in the family law setting.

Jennifer is an accredited mediator and can assist parties to resolve many different kinds of disputes, including family, personal injury, insurance, property, employment and estate disputes. Jennifer’s calm, respectful and neutral approach to dispute resolution helps put parties at ease and keep them focused on overcoming their dispute.

Values and Approach

  • Neutral and Respectful

Jennifer acts as an independent neutral, giving each party an equal opportunity to be heard and contribute to the resolution process. Jennifer encourages creative solutions tailored to meet the individual needs of the parties. Mediation sessions are structured to facilitate productive discussions, particularly when previous negotiations have failed due to high conflict disputes. All mediation sessions are confidential.

  • Legally Informed

As a neutral mediator, Jennifer does not offer either party legal advice. Parties are encouraged to seek independent legal advice as and when needed throughout the mediation process. However, as a lawyer-mediator with experience in family law, high conflict dynamics, personal injury and insurance claims, Jennifer is live to the legal issues at stake, can provide basic legal information and parties can rely on her years of experience working through all stages of a lawsuit for guidance.

  • Clear and Structured

A step-by-step process: individual intake and screening, an agreement to mediate, a defined agenda, joint and private (“shuttle”) discussions where helpful, and written terms with next steps. You’ll know what to expect at every stage.

  • Flexible Formats

Mediation is available virtually (secure video) or in person. Half-day or full-day bookings, with the option of shuttle mediation for sensitive matters.

  • Local and Mobile

In person across the Fraser Valley and Greater Vancouver, and by arrangement in Merritt, Kamloops, Salmon Arm, Vernon, and nearby rural communities. Virtual mediation is available anywhere in BC.

Benefits of Mediation

  • Mediation can be a more cost-effective method to resolve your dispute. Parties can participate with or without lawyers present and the legal expense of a costly trial may be avoided.

  • Mediation allows parties to voice their concerns in a safe and productive way and contribute to the solution.

  • Mediation puts the parties in control of their own future and allows them to be creative when crafting solutions that suit their own distinct circumstances.

  • Mediation provides closure and certainty. It brings an end to litigation costs and the uncertainty of trial.

  • Parties that have participated in creating an agreement are more likely to abide by it than a court order imposed upon them by a judge. Mediation allows the opportunity to build durable and lasting agreements.

  • Mediation is confidential and cannot be discussed outside of the mediation session. This allows parties to come to mediation with an open mind and explore a broad scope of resolutions.

  • In family and estate matters, where the parties will likely have long-term relationships such as co-parenting or sibling relationships, mediation offers a process for respectful discussions and guidance in methods for dealing with future disputes if they arise.
